James Monroe Procter (Pop) passed from this life on February 22, 2020 at age 93. A memorial service will be held at the Sixth Street Church of Christ in Friona on Saturday, February 29, at 11:00 a.m. with Jeff Procter officiating.
He was born on December 14, 1926 to Lillie Mae and Ben Robert Procter. He grew up in the Lamesa, Texas area and graduated from high school in 1944. His parents signed for him to join the Navy on December 6, 1944 as he was not quite 18 years old. While on leave from Boot Camp, he came home to Lamesa and married Sue Peterson on February 20, 1945. After his discharge in April of 1946, he returned to Lamesa to farm. In 1952, the family moved to Friona, bought land north of town and farmed for many years. In addition to farming, he served many years as a Deacon for the Sixth Street Church of Christ in Friona.
In all his roles as a father, grandfather, great grandfather, and more recently great great grandfather, he was known for his humble spirit, friend to all, his refinishing of antique furniture, and his ability to create many wood projects, including wood toys, bird houses, and food carriers as requested by his wife and daughters-in law. He was very generous with his talents in this area and will be remembered each time these wooden items are used.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillie Mae and Ben Robert Procter in 1961. He is survived by his wife, Sue Procter of Friona, Ron Procter and wife, Libby, of Monahans, Texas, Dewayne Procter and wife, Cheryl, of Friona Texas, and Ted Procter and wife, Glenda, also of Friona, Texas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, eighteen nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
