Area students learn about agriculture
Parmer County Farm Bureau hosted its annual “Ag in the Classroom” last Tuesday morning at the Friona Community Center. A total of 181 4th Graders from all over Parmer County attended the event. The total included 45 students from Bovina, 45 students from Farwell, 83 students from Friona, and 8 students from Lazbuddie.
The “Ag in the Classroom” event utilizes multiple exhibits and demonstrations to help bring the world of agriculture to young minds. It gives students first-hand knowledge of how crops are harvested for food & clothing, the care and maintenance of livestock, and how safety is a vital ingredient in all areas of agriculture. It explains to the students how agriculture touches their lives every day.
Special guest presenters included; Todd Thompson from Texas Farm Bureau, Melanie Hartman from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Garret Wilson from Southwest Dairy Farmers, Michael Hewitt & Lalo Hermosilla from Cargill, and Wendy Cole from the Agri-Life Extension Office. Other special guests were FISD Superintendent Jimmy Burns and FHS Ag Instructor Malia Marion.
Friona High School FFA members also participated in and assisted with the various exhibits. They included seniors Gabbi Douglas & Samuel Frye, juniors Marcos Juarez, Maddie Sharrock, and Zeus Zamudio, sophomore Kambree Kimbrough, and freshmen Anthony Abarca and Tim Ally.
Parmer County Farm Bureau representatives Mitchell Smiley and Veca White would like to thank all the students and their teachers who attended the event. Also, a special thanks to Monte Schueler and Samuel Frye for the animals, Parmer County Implement Company for the swather, and Leal’s of Muleshoe for catering the meal.
The Parmer County Farm Bureau Board of Directors includes; Michael Rushing (Pres), J’Lond Jarecki (VP), Fred Cook (Sec/Treas), Ricky Barnett, J.B. Barrett, Kirk Frye, Alan Monroe, David Norton, Monte Schueler, and Kevin Welch.
Garret Wilson from Southwest Dairy Farmers gave a multi-media presentation of how dairy farms work. The students got to witness a “live” milking and learned about how dairy products provide them with quality nutrition. See more “Ag in the Classroom” photos in the Friona Star Newspaper.
