Pageant begins 61st Annual Maize Days festivities
The 61st Annual Maize Days celebration begins on Friday, September 8 at 6 p.m. at the Friona High School Auditorium with the Miss Friona and Little Miss Friona pageants. The pageants will once again be held simultaneously. Miss Friona 2016 Sydney Frye and Little Miss Friona 2016 Aylen Moreno will crown the new Miss Friona and Little Miss Friona.
Tickets will be available at the door for $10 for adults, $8 for students and $4 for children 4 years of age and under.
This year there are sixteen Miss Friona contestants and eleven Little Miss Friona contestants.
The Little Miss contestants are: Yulaney Carrasco is the 5-year-old daughter of Adam and Julie Carrasco. She is sponsored by Friona InterBank; Jayleigh Raye Contreras is the 6-year-old daughter of Juan and Raquel Contreras. She is sponsored by Ag Texas; Sophia September DeLaCruz is the 6-year-old daughter of Jesse and Marissa DeLaCruz. She is sponsored by Lineage Logistics.
Abigail Ariella Guerra is the 5-year-old daughter of Noel and Jessica Guerra. The Gospel Gathering sponsored by the Friona Christian Ministries will be Wednesday, September 13 at the Friona High School Auditorium at 6 p.m. Admission is free to the public. The event is a community Christian worship time.
Homecoming festivities begin on Friday, September 15 with the crowning of the Homecoming Queen before the Chieftains take the field against the Bovina Mustangs at 7:30 p.m.
The Dixon Memorial 6 Mile & 2 Mile Run/Walk will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, September 16 at Reeve Lake. Entry fee is $5. For more information, contact Joel Duffield at (308) 641-3034 or the Chamber office at (806) 250-3491.
This year the theme of Maize Days is “Harvesting for Health” and everyone is invited to line Main Street at 10 a.m. for the annual parade. If you are interested in entering a float or being part of the parade contact the Chamber office.
The Stitching Post will once again host a Quilt Show at the Depot after the parade.
The Friona Volunteer Fire Department will be drawing for the lucky winner of a Mossimo ATV and trailer at 1 p.m. in the park. Tickets are $10 and available from any fireman.
Vendors and exhibitors will be in the Friona City Park during the parade and throughout the day.
