Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

We are getting spoiled by the warm days and forget there is still a bunch of winter to go. Had snow on the grass Tuesday. Spring begins March 20. In three weeks, on March 8, Daylight Saving Time begins. We will spring forward an hour and stay there until the first Sunday in November which is November 1.

An accident Saturday February 14 at 9:00 p.m. five miles east of Farwell on Hwy 70/84 took the life of a 22-year-old Clovis woman, Jade Burger. She was a passenger in a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire driven by 19-year-old Brielle Dansereau, also of Clovis. The eastbound vehicle drifted onto the shoulder's rumble strips. The driver overcorrected to the left, went into a sideways skid and hit a tree in the median. Miss Burger was pronounced dead at 9:37 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Pam Haseloff. Miss Dansereau was airlifted to UMC in Lubbock with incapacitating injuries.

I was invited to the Valentine dinner for the city of Friona employees and their families. It was Thursday February 12 at the senior citizen center. Mayor Rick White cooked the beef loin and his famous potato casserole with corn flakes on top. I'm sure he would share the recipe. It is highly tasty. City Manager Patricia Phipps said this Valentine dinner would be an annual event replacing the employee Christmas dinner because it is difficult to get people together during the Christmas holidays.

This is Mayor Rick White's potato casserole recipe as mentioned above: serves 8-10 people.

2 lb hash browns cubed, 1 can cream of chicken, 2 cups shredded cheese (Colby Jack/Monterrey Jack mix) 12 oz sour cream, 1 stick melted butter, add salt and pepper to your liking. Mix ingredients well and pour into a 9x12 pan. Crush 2 cups of corn flakes and mix with ½ stick melted butter, pour on top. Cook for 1 hour 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Enjoy.

Former Friona Methodist Church pastor Bobby McMillian (from late 1974 to 1977 or 1978) is celebrating his 76th birthday in Lubbock on Friday. We know that because Lisa Carson of Lubbock asked us to find the story when Rev. McMillian began his Friona ministry. Some of the old-timers might remember Rev. McMillian. He would have been in his late thirties back then.

I finally gave in and went to the clinic last Thursday. I am having my annual bout with bronchitis. P.A. Michael Sermon looked me over, gave me a shot, some big pills, and a cough syrup prescription. The instructions on the cough syrup bottle said to take 5ml every six hours. It sounded like a big dose to me. I'm sure folks that take a lot of medicine know how much 5ml is but I didn't. I got stressed for a few minutes but remembered everything we need to know is in the computer. So I found out that 5ml is about one teaspoon. Not sure why they didn't just say one teaspoon every six hours. Feeling better this week thanks to the meds and Dr. Sermon.

Happy anniversary to Jessie and Alice Stone of Bovina celebrating 46 years and Darla and Rex Bracken for 45 years. A couple of real nice couples. Congratulations.

Donkey basketball is coming to the FHS gym Sunday March 1 at 2:00 p.m. It is sponsored by Mr. Blount and the Friona FFA students. Tickets are $6.00 in advance at the ag shop or $8.00 at the door. Preschool is free. There will be two games then a championship game. Wilder than a rodeo and funnier than a circus, so they say. Come on out and support the FFA.

Kitty Gallman and Melanie Braun are holding sale #3 of Clydie's Collectibles Saturday February 21. There is a narrow shopping window, the sale is only from 1 - 3 p.m. at 306 W. 14th. Was shocked to hear that Joe's Boot Shop in Clovis has closed its doors, out of business. No reason was given. Owners Joe and Darla Rhodes sold it to their grandson three years ago. Joe's started in Muleshoe and moved to Clovis in 2001.

Meanwhile, in Vega, the fancy Boot Hill Saloon & Grill is on the auction block. An auction is set for February 28 and the bidding will start at $25,000.

On Sunday March 1 you can go by St. Teresa's Catholic Church for their annual Mexican dinner then head on over to the high school gym for the Donkey Basketball games. Both events are fundraisers, for the church and Friona FFA. We will see you there. Until then!
