Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

Happy birthday to my little brother Rick on Wednesday June 29. He was born in 1956, the summer before my senior year in Hillsboro High School. I was 16 when Rickie was born. Mother let me name him, Rickie Lee Carr, his initials the same as mine. Seemed fun and important at the time. I graduated a few weeks before his 1st birthday. I can’t pick him up and toss him around anymore.

The burn ban is still lifted until further notice but folks are urged to be careful with their 4th of July fireworks this weekend. The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a fireworks show that will begin about dusk at Reeve Lake, monitored by our volunteer firemen. Shooting fireworks inside the city limits is prohibited.

The Milk House Market is having a 20% off sale June 30 from 11a-5p, July 2 10a-3p, and July 4 11a-3p. It is their 2-year anniversary for the business. Work is continuing on remodeling the former Hometown Hardware building for the Milk House Market’s new location.

The rain Sunday afternoon came fast and caused a three-wheeler motorcycle accident at the west city limits on Hwy 60. The motorcycle, occupied by a male and female, hydroplaned about 2:00 p.m. and flipped over a couple of times. Injuries were minor but they were transported by EMS to PMC. The couple is from Clovis. Friona firemen responded also.

Was good to see former Friona head coach Bob Ferguson and his wife Deirdre Sunday afternoon. They were in town for a wedding anniversary party and I ran into them at Fast Stop as they were on their way back to Spearman. Good folks.

July 4 and July 16 merchants can have sidewalk sales without paying the city permit fee. Milk House Market and Interior Expressions will be open both days. Malouf’s will be open July 4. Ivy Cottage and Creative Chaos will be open July 16 which is Cheeseburger Cook-Off day.

The Hereford Brand reported that Hereford ISD superintendent Kelli Moulton will be leaving to accept the superintendent position in Galveston. Quite a change in atmosphere and we wish her well. Hereford Regional Medical Center has hired a new administrator/CEO, Jeff Barnhart from the Lynn County Hospital District. Tahoka is the county seat of Lynn County.

Everybody that gets a water bill also got a letter from the city this week about the chemicals that may or may not be in our water. A public hearing on this Consumer Confidence Report will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday July 11 before the city council meeting.

The city swimming pool is back open after the city had to replace a pump. It was closed for a couple of days. They tried to repair the pump by sending it to Hereford but it only lasted a few days so they had to buy a new one.

The president flew to California for a Global Entrepreneurial conference then flew to Seattle for a fundraiser. I still do not think it is right for any president to use Air Force One and taxpayer dollars to fly around to fundraisers or to campaign. Nobody else seems to mind.

The Friona Star office will be closed Monday for the holiday. Deadline for getting news or advertising in next week is still Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Hope everyone has a fun and especially safe July 4th holiday. Our thoughts this holiday to the BNSF families after the horrible crash near Panhandle. Until then!
