The 63rd Annual Maize Days Celebration closed out this past weekend. Karina Gomez was crowned the 2019 Homecoming Queen by last year’s winner Liliana Lozoya and the Chieftains remained undefeated by kicking the Muleshoe Mules 63-14 to win the battle of Highway 214.
The Maize Days Parade included first responders, pageant contestants, vintage vehicles, reunion attendees, machinery, livestock, sports teams, floats, and etc. The Fiesta Friona theme was evident everywhere you looked. Jim Bob Jones was the parade announcer and Erika Montana was his assistant. There was also the return of the bed race, food & fun in the park, and the announcement of the winners of the various raffles.
The Race Returns After the parade, it was time for bed check. Yes, the bed race has returned. Representatives from the four high school classes battled it out for an awesome trophy and $100 cash. The Slaying Seniors won by four mattress lengths and have bragging rights for the year. The Bed Race Teams were: The Slaying Seniors were Andrea Chavez, Anay Chihuahua, Lizbeth Rojas, Eduardo Chavez, Rogelio Palacios, and Marcos Juarez. The Slacking Juniors were Jodie Denton, Kambree Kimbrough, Angel Carranza, David Martinez, Keegan Hurst, Leidi Chihuahua, Colton Riethmayer, Andrez Carrasco, and Chloe Brailiff. The Super Sophomores were Andrew Rivera, Bryan Chavira, Victor Puga, Ahtziri Soltero, Syria Santiago, and Annakaren Salas. The Freshman “The Clika” was Elian Rodriguez, Stef Alley, Jorge Chavez, Joscelin Barraza, Nevaeh Maestas, Eduardo Rodriguez.
Raffle Winners American Legion sold 700 tickets and raised money to send students to Boys State and Girls state. Anaesha Carranza won the $100 gift card. Jim Taylor won the Hoverboard. Margret DeWit won the Quilt. Tickets were drawn by Ediel Rocha, 2nd Grader at Friona Primary School.
The Friona Volunteer Fire Department sold 2000 tickets to support their operations. The winner of the UTV & Trailer was Four Way Pump. Ticket was drawn by Ediel Rocha.
Friona Vocational Agriculture Association sold tickets to help support Friona FFA and FCCLA projects. The 4 “Quarter of Beef” winners were Jeff Stowers, Mark Osborn, Tim Herring, and Chance Lewellen.
The Cow Patty Bingo $300 winner was the Friona Junior High School Choir. Their upcoming events include All-Region tryouts on October 5th, All-Region choir on October 19th, and a concert at 2 p.m. on October 20th in the FHS Auditorium.
