Reported threat leads to school lockdown
On August 21st, the Friona Police Department received a call at 2:36 p.m. reporting a person trying to break into a home in the 500 block of Main Street. The caller also reported that the person had threatened the occupants of the home and had implied the possible use of a gun. When officers responded to the home, the person in question had left the scene. After interviewing witnesses at the home, the officers deemed the suspect to be a credible threat and a search was begun.
At 2:48 p.m. the Friona Police Department notified Friona ISD officials that a possible threat was in the vicinity of a public school building. After being notified of this possible terroristic threat near a school campus, Friona ISD officials initiated a lockdown.
At 3:03 p.m. Friona police officers, with the assistance of Bovina police officers and Parmer County Sheriff officers, located the suspect in the 300 block of West 7th Street. After the suspect was detained, Friona ISD was then notified of the “all clear” and each campus was informed by school officials that normal operations could be resumed. The suspect was not in possession of a firearm.
Alberto Nicolas, 25, of Dimmitt, Texas was arrested by Friona police and charged with burglary of habitation and terroristic threat.
