Valentine’s Day began as St. Valentine’s Day, a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. February 14th, Valentine’s, Day first became associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages as the tradition of courtly love was then flourishing. During 18th century England, this day evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending Valentine cards. Each year on February 14 we peruse the store shelves for the perfect gift or card for a loved one. According to Hallmark, more than 163 million cards—not including packaged kids’ valentines—are exchanged. And it’s not just an American phenomenon. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Italy and Denmark.
Happy Valentines Day!

Standardized testing season is among us. This can be a stressful time for some kids, parents, and teachers, but a few things can be done to reduce that stress. Try minimizing the amount of sugar, processed and refined foods you consume—wholesome food will keep you feeling good and increase mental focus. Getting the right amount of sleep is also very important. Your body is restored and recharged the most during sleep, so be mindful of how much you are getting. Exercise will also benefit your mental health, whether it’s a session at the gym or a walk around the block. Last piece of advice I can give is to counter stressful situations with calming reactions. “You can’t always control what goes on outside, but you can control what goes on inside.”
