Hamilton builds strong program at Randall
The College Baseball World Series is being played this week in Omaha, Nebraska. The two teams vying for the national championship are the University of Arkansas and Oregon State. One of the best players on the Arkansas team is the freshman phenom Heston Kjerstad. The Arkansas outfielder was voted freshman of the year in the Southeastern Conference and was also named all-second team SEC. Heston is the first player in Arkansas history to win the freshman of the year award.
You may not know this but Heston played his high school baseball at Randall High School, located just south of Amarillo. It just so happens that his coach at Randall High was Friona native Cory Hamilton. Cory is a 1995 graduate of Friona High School and has been coaching baseball for the past 18 years. He was an assistant coach for 3 years and has been a head coach for the past 15 years. He was head coach at Dumas for 5 of those years and has been the head coach at Randall for the past 10 years.
Just this past season, Cory notched his 300th win as a head coach. Cory and his staff have built one of the best high school baseball programs in the State of Texas. Great coaches have at least three things in common. They love the game, they have a desire to teach the game, and they have compassion for those young people they mentor. Successful individuals and teams are the result of dedication and hard work. Congratulations to Heston, Cory, and the coaching staff at Randall High School. Keep up the good work!
