So far, I have heard that May is ‘Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month’, ‘Skin Cancer Awareness Month’, ‘Hepatitis C Awareness Month’, and ‘Asian Pacific American Heritage Month’. I’m sure there are a lot more than that, but for now I’ll just tell you to look twice for motorcycles, put on sunscreen, get tested for Hep C (especially people born between 1945 and 1965) and take time to learn about/honor the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success.

Our new office space has been a welcoming change, with a more open layout and lots of windows providing natural light. We are still settling in, but I think we’re all happy with the outcome. I remember when I was younger (when this building was still vacant) my dad brought me over and pulled into the parking lot, explaining to me how he wanted to move the Friona Star office here. He had been thinking about moving offices for a while, but the idea never came to fruition. I think he would be very happy to see how the Friona Star has carried on.

Make plans for the 6th Annual Cinco de Mayo parade to be held Saturday, May 5, 2018, down historic Broadway! The 2018 theme will be, “Our History is Important - Celebrate Your History!” Organizations, schools, youth and families are especially urged to be a part of this year’s parade and celebrate this cultural history and contributions of the Mexican American community. Please bring bags for candy, as there will be lots of it.

Don’t forget, May 6-12 is National Nurse’s Week. Our Friona nurses deserve every bit of appreciation that we can give, so extend a special thank you or an extra hug to those who work so hard for the community.

We had a beautiful ivy plant delivered to us this week from Gerall and Mary Beth Wyly. We appreciate that kind gesture, and definitely enjoy having a little greenery around the new office. Thank you so much!

Thursday, May 3, is the birthday of my brother, Zac Carr. He is a 2nd grade teacher at Friona Elementary, and I am very proud of him for doing such awesome work this school year. If you see Zac in the hall, give him a nice pat on the back. Happy birthday, brother.
