61st Maize Days festivities
As 61st Annual Maize Days festivities wind down there is still more fun to be had.
Friday, September 15, the Friona Chieftains will host their Highway 60 rivals ,the Bovina Mustangs, for Homecoming. The Homecoming Queen will be announced before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. There are five young women vying for the Queen’s position. Those nominees are Erica Barrera, Erika Grado, Jackie Legarreta, Nishna Soto and Megan Stone.
Cargill will be serving up burgers before the game and the Friona Noon Lions will be whipping up hot, salty batches of their World Famous fries.
A number of class reunions are planned for this weekend.
Saturday, September 16 dawns early with the Dixon Memorial 6 Mile & 2 Mile Run/Walk starting at 7 a.m. at Reeve Lake. Entry fee is $5. For more information, contact Joel Duffield at (308) 641-3034 or the Chamber office at (806) 250-3491.
The Annual Maize Days parade will begin lining up at 9 a.m. on Euclid Street in front of Friona Junior High School. The parade theme this year is “Harvesting for Health” and will begin at 10 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to line Main Street and cheer on all the parade entries. If you are interested in entering a float or being a part of the parade, contact the Chamber or join the line-up at 9 a.m.
Vendors and exhibitors will be on hand at the Friona City Park during the parade and throughout the festivities.
The Stitching Post will once again host a Quilt Show at the Depot after the parade. Stop by and check out the beautiful quilts and admire the handiwork.
The Friona Volunteer Fire Department will drawing for the lucky winner of a Mossimo ATV and trailer at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available from any fireman.
Prairie Acres will hold their drawing for a bicycle at 2 p.m. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.
