Squaws beat Dimmitt, 3-0 in district
Saturday, September 29, the Squaws C and varsity teams played host to the Grady Lady Broncos. The JV Squaws played Hobbs, NM in the solver bracket championship match at the Portales JV tournament. All three teams were victorious.
The junior varsity team finished tied for fourth place in pool play on Friday and lost out on points, seeding them into the silver bracket where they defeated Roswell’s C team in the first round. On Saturday the girl’s stepped up their play and won a tight 3-game contest with the Hobbs Lady Eagles, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13, to claim the silver bracket championship.
The C team finished off the Grady JV in two games, 25-11, 25-20. They used good serving in game one and fought off a Grady comeback in game two for the victory.
In the varsity match the Squaws got consistent play from everyone and dominated the Lady Broncos in a three game sweep, 25-12, 25-18, 25-13. The Squaws move to 2-0 in district and are tied with Tulia.
The Squaws teams swept the visiting Dimmitt Bobbies in dominating fashion winning all seven games. The C team swept the Bobbies 2-0 with scores of 25-19, 25-5. In the second game the C team got into rhythm and used good serving to put the Bobbies in a hole that they could not come back from.
The JV team was next and even though the Bobbies were determined the Squaws prevailed with a two game sweep 25-16, 25-18. With the win the JV moves to 3-0 in district and will try to finish the first round undefeated in Tulia on Saturday.
The varsity had to come up with a sweep to keep pace and they did with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-8 win. The Squaws had good passing from Bianca Romero, Ashli Smith, Mykelti Rhodes, and Brianna Miller. The setters, Kendall Kimbrough and Kalley Preston did a good job of getting the ball to the hitters and mixing up the offense.
The two middles, Maddie Murphree and Marissa Lozoya, did a good job of establishing a presence which opened it up for the outside hitters, Kendall, Kalley, Brianna, and Dakotah Hicks. We are serving and passing with more consistency and it has helped us put consistent pressure on the opponents.
Our tough early season and summer schedule is starting to pay off. We just need to keep playing as a team, keep improving and stay focused on the next match and we will be okay.
The Squaws travel to Tulia on Saturday to take on the Lady Hornets. The game times have been moved up to accommodate the kids in both band and volleyball. Game times are C team 9:30 a.m., JV 10:30 a.m., and varsity at 11:30 a.m.
