Snack Pak 4 Kids program underway
By Jo Beth Gipson
Way to go Friona! Snack Pak 4 Kids is well on the way to meeting needs for children from food-insecure homes because of your generosity.
Following the Gospel Gathering during Maize Days almost $1,000 was donated and 34 volunteers signed on to help. That is awesome. 4-H will be sponsoring a peanut butter and Pop Tart drive the first two weeks in October so be on the lookout for donation boxes in churches and businesses around town. Buy a 16 oz jar of peanut butter and a box of any flavor Pop Tarts next time you go to the grocery and be ready to put them in the boxes.
We are still in need of corporate sponsors, churches, and individual donations. Please make this a one-time donation, a monthly donation, or even a yearly budgeted donation. Your donation is 100% tax deductible and will go a long way in nourishing at-risk kids.
Make checks payable to Snack Pak 4 Kids and mail to the Friona Star, PO Box 789, Friona, Texas 79035 or bring by the Friona Star office. Donations will be given to the local committee then sent to Amarillo so we can be sure they are credited to the Friona Snack Pak account.
The Senior Citizens have graciously donated the use of their building for food storage and a place to meet to distribute food into paks. Our first food drop will come from Lubbock on October 23. Volunteers will meet October 25 at 5:45 p.m. at the Senior Citizen building at 1410 Washington for orientation and packing of the paks. Food will be delivered on October 26.
We will be distributing food every Friday morning during the school year so you can see how vital it is that we have a good supply of items and money.
Amarillo teachers have reported that not only has some behavior improved but performance in the class room has risen since Snack Pak 4 Kids has been in operation. I am proud to live in a community that shows such an outpouring of concern. Friona will rise to the challenge.
