Official weather guy John Gurley said the shower we got Monday afternoon was .10” making a huge .20” for the month. More showers were in the forecast maybe.

Five of our volunteer firemen, Chance Lewellen, Stephen Campbell, Skip Hodges, Bryan Harris, and Amador Rocha, are spending the week at a Texas A&M fire school for fire training. I believe there is some rescue training involved. We continue to be grateful for the service of our volunteer firemen.

Congress is on a 7-week recess, the longest recess in 30 years. Having congress on a recess is a positive thing I reckon. When they ain’t there they can’t mess anything up.

Bull Town Days in Farwell is Saturday July 30. There is a parade that starts in Texico and ends in the Farwell city park. Lots of food, music, and activities will be available. Bovina is planning Bull Town Days Saturday August 6 with a parade at 10 a.m. leading to their city park. Food booths, salsa contest, volleyball, and other activities will be there. Everyone is invited to both events.

Becky Soto and her Becky’s Burritos workers cooked 150 burritos for last Saturday morning’s Kidz Building Camp breakfast after the Friday night sleepover. Becky told me she has an order to deliver 250 burritos the first week of August for a Clovis golf tournament. Work is coming along on her new building but not fast enough for her. Becky’s son Miguel graduated from WT A&M and is now starting work on his Master’s. Fine young man. Has lost 60 pounds and is trim and healthy. He said he lost the weight when he went to college and stopped eating his mom’s burritos every morning.

Monday morning August 1 the 2016 Chieftain football players will report at 6:30 a.m. to begin their practice which will be from 7:00 a.m. to noon each day. The first four days are shorts and helmets, then Friday is full pads. Sophomore Marco Monreal is slated for quarterback duties this season.

Also the volleyball girls and the cross country teams will begin practice Monday. Coach Bryan Masse has a lot of returning talent this season. Looks like the starting lineup will be six girls that have played since they were freshmen and are now seniors. Good luck to all of the coaches and athletes as we begin another season.

Don’t forget to come to the Chieftain home opener August 26 vs. Farwell. Cargill will be giving away free hamburgers and the Noon Lions will be cooking world famous French fries. Go Big Red!

Thanks to everyone that sends us news and photos. We appreciate it. I’m heading to Denton/Dallas for a couple of days this weekend. My oldest son Casey is getting married Friday night in a small family only ceremony at his Deep Ellum loft apartment. Son Zac is coming from Austin. Will get to see at least four of my five kids together. I’ll see you all next week. Until then.
