The 1st Annual Kidz Building Camp held last week was a success. The team led by Lupe Taylor, right back row, took home the coveted gold hammers for building the best building. Members of the team were Quay Schueler, Caleb Geske, Tristan Schueler, Hayden Burrus, Kayla Vielman, David Tafoya, and Meya Orozco. Congratulations to these young builders.

Crews were busy Tuesday morning stringing electrical cables across Highway 60. They used both man power and a helicopter to keep from holding up traffic along the busy highway. Official weather guy John Gurley said the shower we got Monday afternoon was .10” making a huge .20” for the month. More showers were in the forecast maybe.

Five of our volunteer firemen, Chance Lewellen, Stephen Campbell, Skip Hodges, Bryan Harris, and Amador Rocha, are spending the week at a Texas A&M fire school for fire training. I believe there is some rescue training involved. We continue to be grateful for the service of our volunteer firemen.

Primary Registration
If your child will be 4-years-old by September 1 or you have a new kindergarten or first grade student registration will be held at the Friona Primary School office on August 4-5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

FHS practices begin Monday
Friona High School sports will kick into gear on Monday, August 1 with practices starting for volleyball, cross-country and football.
Volleyball practice will start at 8 a.m. and complete each day at noon. Practice will be held at the FHS main gym. Athletes will need a completed physical packet to participate. The volleyball teams will also be doing conditioning and swimming on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so athletes will be expected to bring swimwear and a towel. St. Teresa's Jamaica will sell brisket plate lunch
St. Teresa’s annual Jamaica will be Sunday August 7 at the parish hall area. This year they will serve a brisket plate inside which includes brisket, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, tea, and cake for $10. Plates to go will be available.
All concessions at the Jamaica are paid with tickets which are $1.00 each and will be available at the jamaica bank.

Commissioners implement burn ban
In Monday’s regular meeting the Parmer County commissioners declared a county burn ban in effect for 90 days. The ban was effective at midnight Monday July 25.
Exceptions to the burn ban are agricultural or incinerator burning only when the wind is less than 10 mph and the humidity is 25% or more. In addition, the fire department and Sheriff’s office must be notified in advance of burning.
