Short week, big paper. This week’s Star graduation special is one of our largest papers each year. Because we switched printers a few weeks ago they asked us to try and get our graduation pages to them early. Seems that every paper they print will have a big graduation edition. So, instead of finishing our pages and sending them Wednesday we were scheduled to print on Tuesday so we had to lay out the pages a day early. We did some over the weekend work to meet the deadline. Hope you enjoy our efforts.

Went out to the cemetery cleanup day last Thursday. Did not have as many volunteers show up as in the past but we managed to pick up and cleanup and enjoy those great chocolate chip cookies Jan Chesher always brings. Monday is Memorial Day. Flags will be out on our veterans’ graves. At 1:00 p.m. there will be a short Memorial Day program at the cemetery. Everyone is invited to attend and honor our veterans past and present. This is the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day. See you there.

Maybe you saw in last week’s Star that the Hereford Hospital is no longer performing mammograms. The Harrington Mobile Mammogram bus will be visiting Hereford once a month and will still come to Friona too I reckon. Also, my brother Rick has been going to rehab here for his rotator cuff surgery and he said that Dr. Ryan who works with Dr. Parker’s patients will not be visiting Friona after the end of June. Ryan is moving to Canadian to practice.

Have you followed that lady from Grand Prairie with the Star Wars mask that went crazy on the Internet? If you saw the video of the Kohl’s people showing up at her house with a bunch of Star Wars stuff, our Class of 2001 graduate Mike Ortiz was shooting the video. He is a photojournalist with a Dallas TV station.

Former Prairie Acres administrator Billy Ray Johnston moved back to Clarendon and recently fell and broke a hip. Then had a blood clot. Been in and out of Amarillo hospital a couple of times. Keep Billy Ray in your thoughts for a full recovery. And Hugh Moseley is a resident at Prairie Acres now I’m told.

At the county commissioners meeting Monday, Lazbuddie was approved to draw funds from the Parmer County Permanent School Fund to use for roof repair. Cargill and TxDOT will discuss a plan for installing plant entrance warning signs. Commissioners will apply for a Texas Association of Counties grant to use for first aid and CPR certification, safety shoes and other safety related equipment.
They approved the use of the courthouse lawn for Farwell’s Bordertown Days July 30, 2016. Sheriff Geries reported they broke up a theft ring that was stealing motorcycles and 4-wheelers in other areas of the Panhandle and bringing them to the Farwell area where they were stored, stripped and/or sold.
