Spring is definitely here. Heard this suggestion this week: Spring is here and people are warned to lock their car doors. It is the best way to keep people from giving you squash.

Our sympathies to the families of Tommy Jones and Jeannette Thurman. Tommy passed away last week in Amarillo. Jeanette died Friday April 22 in Hereford. Their obituaries are printed in this week’s Star.

Mickey Griffin had quadruple bypass surgery at BSA in Amarillo last week. David Grimsley is back in Parmer Medical Center recovering from a staph infection after a hip replacement operation earlier. Dale Hart had hip replacement surgery at BSA Monday after suffering a broken femur in a fall over the weekend. Folks encourage your elderly family members and friends to be vigilant in avoiding a fall. Too often we have seen our elderly citizens suffer from broken bones when they fall.

Last week during my daily visit to the post office a lady said, “Hi Ron.” I replied, Hi Melanie.” A few minutes later when I got to the office it dawned on me that she was not Melanie. She was Melissa. Does that ever happen to you? So I apologize to her and to everyone from now on whose name I might get confused. Thanks for your patience.

Jake Ebeling is the new Chieftain head basketball coach. Jake was junior high coach last year and assisted with varsity football. Now he will be moving over to the high school. Jake is a nice young man and very energetic as I have witnessed. I believe he will do well with the varsity boys basketball. Coach Daniel Hutchins has left coaching and will be the assistant principal at Friona junior high beginning next school year. Hartley ISD principal Danny Finch has been hired as assistant principal for Friona high school.

Construction on the Scandia wind farm project is proposed to begin in July or August. The quarterly treasurer’s report was discussed and approved. The treasurer’s quarterly report is included in this Friona Star. The next commissioners meeting was changed from May 9 to May 16.

I attended the Class of 2016 senior dinner at the 6th Street Church of Christ Monday evening. Thanks to church members and minister Jeff Procter for the Mexican pile-on meal and a super-sized piece of cake. The seniors are on the countdown, about 26 days away from graduation. The Victory Family Worship Center’s senior class dinner will be Monday May 9.
