By Malia Marion
The Friona FFA Floriculture team won the Area Contest this past Saturday and will be advancing to State. Adaline White received 1st place high individual, Gabbi Douglas received 3rd place, Anahi Cigarroa received 5th place, and Carly Drake received 14th place. This group of girls has worked many hours studying for this contest. The state contest will be held in Huntsville on May 4th.
The purpose of the Floriculture Career Development Event is to stimulate the study of, and interest in, the production and retailing of cut flowers, plants and foliage through the agricultural education curriculum. The event requires students to identify plant materials, tools, and pests common to the industry, demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific principles and management practices applied in the industry via a written exam, make observations, draw conclusions, and utilize higher order thinking skills in problem solving situations.
We are so proud of this team for making it this far in the first year Friona has had a Floriculture team. Many of the skills for this contest are learned in their floral design class. Floral Design is designed to develop students’ ability to identify and demonstrate the principles and techniques related to floral design as well as to develop an understanding of the management of floral enterprises. Through the analysis of artistic floral styles and historical periods, students will develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. Students will respond to and analyze floral designs, thus contributing to the development of lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations.
The Floriculture Team and Floral Design Class would like to thank Kip & Misty Frye as well as Ivy Cottage for their generous donation towards a floral cooler to help get our program started. They have also been a huge asset to the success of our team by allowing the girls to come in to Ivy Cottage and study their plant material and tools. We cannot thank them enough for their continuous support.
