The 62nd Annual Maize Days Celebration kept rolling this past week with the crowning of a Homecoming Queen, Friday Night Football, the Dixon Memorial Walk/Run, the Parade, and a meet/eat/greet/raffling good time in the City Park.
During the Friona-Roosevelt pre-game festivities Friday night, Liliana Lozoya was named the 2018 Homecoming Queen. Last year’s winner, Jacqueline Legarreta, was there to place the crown. The FHS Marching Band was also on the field in full uniform to assist in the event. They will go to marching contest on October 20th in Amarillo. Even though the bonfire got rained out Thursday night, the Friona Chieftains still lit a fire under the visiting Eagles and took them to the limit 38-0 to remain undefeated for the season.
On Saturday morning the Dixon Memorial Walk/Run was held in challenging cool conditions. The upper 40s and low 50s were a drastic change from the 80-90 degree days we had earlier in the week. The cold weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants and Parmer Paws raised over $800 to help homeless pets in our community.
The annual Maize Days Parade had 65 entrants that included first responders, pageant contestants, vintage vehicles, reunion attendees, machinery, livestock, sports teams, floats, and Elvis. Jim Bob Jones was the parade announcer and Erika Montana was his assistant.
After the parade, everyone enjoyed a wide variety of food and fun in the park. The 62nd Annual Maize Days Celebration is now rock-n-roll history. Thank you, thank you very much.
