Hub intersection claims another life
The intersection of State Highway 214 and State Highway 86, known as the “Hub” intersection to locals, was the scene of another fatal accident last Thursday.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, at approximately 4:21 p.m. on Thursday, June 7th Raymond Mercado of Lubbock was driving a semitrailer south on SH 214 approaching the SH 86 intersection. Noe Panjoj De La Cruz, was driving his 2015 Mercury SUV east on SH 86 approaching the same intersection that required him to stop. Mr. De La Cruz failed to yield the right of way at the intersection and drove into the path of Mercado’s semitrailer. Both vehicles came to rest on private property on the southeast corner of the intersection and both vehicles were facing southeast.
Mr. De La Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:30 p.m. by Parmer County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Deena Leuea. He was 19 years old and a resident of Friona. The intersection of SH 214 and SH 86 is located 8 miles south of Friona. No other vehicles were involved and the DPS is still investigating the crash.
