Official weather guru John Gurley said the weekend snow was .75”, 1.27 of moisture. The low temp was only 24 and the high all weekend was 36. We received another .07 Tuesday night. For the month so far 1.53”.

Xcel Energy reports that since Sunday they have replaced 170 poles plus 285 cross arms in the Pampa, Perryton, Borger district. They have identified another 260 poles and 585 cross arms that will need to be replaced. There were 870 employees including staff involved in the restoration of power. As of Tuesday, all the power up there was still not restored. Fortunately, our area escaped power outages. Many thanks to the power company employees who worked in terrible conditions to get power back on.

A couple of anniversaries this week. Harry and Margret DeWit celebrated 25 years. And a name everyone around here knows well, Victor and Debbie Leal celebrated 30 years. Congratulations to both. Many more.

The First Baptist Church group of five who went to South Africa on a mission trip returned to Friona Tuesday. Other than a giant case of jet lag they are all well and glad to be home. Paige Tyler had a fall and got some stiches in her chin but she said she is doing fine now. They were gone almost two weeks.

Connie Slagle has sent word that she has received over 500 books donated to the Book Shoppe. Connie keeps the Book Shoppe on 6th St. open on Wednesdays from 3-5:00 p.m. or by appointment.

January 18 to February 17 is the time period to sign-up to run for city council or school board. The election date is May 6. Three terms are expiring on the city council; Alan Monroe, Nancy Davis, and Bruce Fleming. Two terms are expiring on the school board, Wade Schueler and Jose Cigarroa. Packets for anyone that wants to sign up are available at city hall and the Friona ISD administration office.

Friona PD says some local residents have received checks from Publisher’s Clearing House ($2,000) and Carestream Health ($10,000). They say it is a scam and do not try to cash the checks. If you have received similar checks contact the Friona PD at 250-2711.

The first Friona blood drive of 2017 is next Thursday January 26 at Calvary Baptist. Several local businesses pitched in to sponsor long sleeve gray t-shirts for each donor. The Noon Lions will provide a mini-Mexican pile-on for donors too. See the Coffee Memorial ad elsewhere in this Star and come give the gift of life.

Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative sent eight crew members to Perryton to North Plains Electric Cooperative to help restore 1,000 poles and cross arms that are down due to ice on the lines 8 inches thick.

Don’t forget the Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the annual citizen awards; man and woman of the year, most courteous employee, teacher of the year, boy and girl student of the year etc. Get nomination forms from the Chamber office. Call 250-3491.
