Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

Monday and Tuesday we had what could be described as heavy downpours but no hail included. Official weather guy John Gurley reports 2.83" total. Sunday night .33", Monday 2.12", and Tuesday .38". Lots of rain, up to 11" down south at Lubbock, Seagraves, Post, etc. Big rains caused some flooding in Clovis too.

Well so far this week is Teacher Appreciation Week, National Small Business Week, National Hospital Week, and National Corrections Officers Week. So thanks to all of our teachers (listed in the ad in this week's Star), thanks to all of our corrections officers at the Parmer Detention Center in Farwell (otherwise known as the county jail), and thanks to our local small businesses that keep our town humming along. We say thanks and are thankful for our top notch Parmer Medical Center hospital. What a great facility for our little town.

We went over for the Bovina Cinco de Mayo celebration last Saturday. They had a small colorful parade, some cute folkloric dancers, arts and crafts booths, and lots of food and music. A local elderly gentleman who apparently pressed on the gas pedal instead of his brakes damaged three other vehicles just as the parade was ending on 3rd St. Luckily there were no serious injuries. The gentleman was transported to PMC by the Bovina EMS.

Received a subscription renewal from Mal & Pat Manchee in Hereford with this note included: "Ron, this will make 53 years we have had a subscription. Don't always agree with you but really enjoy the paper. Keep up the good job." Since we only accept subscriptions from people who agree with us I will be canceling Mal's subscription unless he agrees to agree with me. Thank you Mal & Pat. Always appreciate our subscribers, especially those who have subscribed for 53 years.

A parents meeting for this year's 7th grade class (next year's 8th graders) will be held Tuesday May 12 in the junior high cafeteria. The school district plans to issue each 8th grade student next year an iPad and this meeting will be about the procedures of the program. Each student will be issued an iPad to use throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Sounds like a pretty important parent meeting to me.

Sunday is Mother's Day. Hope you already know that. Send mom some flowers and hug her neck or give her a call. (Ivy Cottage is open 9-2 on Saturday.) My mom died in March 2013. She loved to get flowers. She would have been 96 on May 29. Yes I miss her often. Many of us will enjoy special memories Sunday. All the best to all the moms. See the rest of you next week. Until then!
