As of sometime Tuesday Friona had received about 5.5" of rain so far in May and it is still raining. Lakes are rising, fields are muddy, and we are all happy about it.

The Independent Living class of Friona High School will be having a yard sale by the tennis courts on Etta Friday May 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All items have been donated by the community to help with the fundraiser.

FHS graduate Miguel Soto and West Texas AM student left this week on a W.T. student group trip to South Korea.

We have learned that Michael Wilcox, the man who died at Homer's Backyard Ball in Amarillo Saturday, is a nephew to Charles Wilkins.

Robin Baize had surgery in Lubbock this week and Ron Smiley was in an Amarillo hospital for a few days. He had a heart cath Tuesday. Remember these families in your thoughts and prayers.

Little late reporting this but on April 30 there was a blood drive at Friona High School. Coffee Memorial Blood Center collected a total of 33 units. Most of those were from high school students. Thank you all for giving the gift of life. The next Friona blood drive is June 11 at Calvary Baptist Church. .

Mayor Rick White's parents, Carl and Lola White, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last weekend in Tucson, Arizona. Rick said it was a big party with about 120 people attending at a local country club. Mr. and Mrs. White own 33 Subway Restaurants in the Tucson area and another 12 in Phoenix.

A bogus check cashing ring hit the area recently. Several younger people attempted to cash fake Cargill checks at a local check cashing business. One young man was arrested by Friona police while trying to cash one of the bad checks. Rick White says the checks were passed off as Cargill, Caviness, and Supreme Beef checks on a Spearman bank.

A new business with some familiar names has opened in the area. Sanders is a fertilizer, seed, and chemical company that has opened at the old Hub Gin location. They are based in Olton. Doug Moyer is the manager, Clay Bandy is operations manager, and Jim Jackson is in sales.

The Friona Public Library's Summer Reading program will be June 1-30. For information and to register your munchkin go by or call the library at 250-3200.

Congratulations to the soon to be empty nesters Mitchell and Kim Smiley on the occasion of their 34th anniversary. Their youngest son Haden graduates as valedictorian of the Class of 2015 and will be off to attend college at Harvard.

The Allsup's home office says they have filed the necessary legal forms to sell alcohol at the Allsup's stores in Bovina and Muleshoe. Carrie Arias has also filed for the license to sell alcohol in Bovina.

Class of 2015 senior Andrea Juarez was named Homecoming Queen, Miss FHS, senior class favorite, and prom queen this school year. Quite a range of honors for a very nice young lady. Named with Andrea were Mason Loflin as Mr. FHS and Prom King, and Lino Tarango as senior class favorite.

Boy Scouts will help put flags on veterans' graves at the cemetery Saturday afternoon. A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Monday sponsored by the American Legion. Everyone is invited to attend the brief gathering. The cemetery always looks good on Memorial Day. You should go out and visit.

At our Wednesday press deadline we received word that funeral services are pending at Blackwell-Mullins Funeral Home for Nick Collier, 61, of Friona.

Nice attendance Sunday at the Mexican dinner to raise funds for Javier Correa who is on a list for a heart transplant. Several Friona firemen showed up to volunteer to help serve the meal. Reports are they raised over $6,000.

Then Monday evening the Noon Lions cooked 250 pounds of French fries and donated them to the Booster Club for the All-Sports banquet. It has been a whirlwind of activities the past few weeks leading up to the May 29 graduation for the Class of 2015. Next week is our big graduation edition. Thanks to everyone participating.
