Friona Star being preserved online
The Friona Star is working with the Texas Tech University Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library to preserve the history contained in the old issues. To date the Southwest Collection Librarians have digitized the Friona Star newspapers from 1925 through 1982.
The Southwest Collection has been working for the last five years to preserve the crumbling history contained in newspapers across the panhandle. The have collected and digitized well over 86,000 issues of newspapers with some issues dating back well over 100 years.
The copies of the Friona Star that are online at present were digitized from microfilm. Some of the microfilm copies have deteriorated and are not in good shape due to the passing of time.
They not only preserve newspapers but they also are working to digitize old books and documents that would otherwise be lost to the ravages of time.

On Tuesday, Austin Allison and Rob King, Assistant Librarians from the Southwest Collection made the long trip from Lubbock to Friona to pick up printed copies of the Star dated from 1982 to 2014. They will take those papers back and with the help of students will digitize them and make them available online in the coming months. They will be back at a later date to collect the Bovina Blade newspapers to be digitized.
So, the next time you have a question concerning Friona history you will be able to look it up online.
