Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

That was rain we saw Saturday night. Didn’t recognize it at first. The WT Services weather info says it was 0.19”. The rain caused a slick highway and a semi- rollover about 8:30 p.m. Saturday west of town near Cargill. A husband and wife team were extracted by our volunteer firemen after they cut out the front windshield. Friona EMS transported them to the hospital. The volunteer firemen were called to two grass fires last week. Let’s hope for a lot more rain.

Loyal Leal’s fans might be happy to know that the popular Mexican Restaurant has opened a Leal’s in Littlefield at 601 Waylon Jennings Blvd., so says an ad in the Littlefield newspaper. Now trips to Littlefield don’t necessarily require a stop in Muleshoe.

Happy anniversary to two nice people. Troy and Mona Sharrock celebrated their 55th anniversary last week. Congratulations and many more. And two more nice people, John and Kathryn Gurley celebrated 25 years.

Don’t forget the senior class steak dinner Sunday. Tickets are $12/$10 in advance and $1 more at the door. A delicious fundraiser for the all-night drug free party after graduation. Serving 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Takeouts available. Seniors have tickets or see Allison Johnston or Kim Kimbrough.

Betty Louise Rector is in the Friona hospital battling leukemia. She has decided against chemo treatment. Betty is 82 and when I talked with her this week she said to tell folks how wonderful the Friona hospital is. Mrs. Rector has long been a supporter of the Friona Star and the community. Her 21st great grandchild was born last week. We offer words of encouragement to her and her family during this difficult period.

We received a subscription renewal from perhaps our most distant reader, Jo Carrol Czeizinger way up in Dover, Delaware. Probably takes the Star a week to get there. She sent along a note that reads, “I enjoy reading about some of my old classmates.” Thanks Jo Carrol for being a loyal reader. Appreciate your comment.

We also received a thank you note, signed by members of the St. Ann’s Catholic Youth Organization in Bovina. It said “thank you for advertising our fundraisers and for your generous support and thoughtfulness.” In today’s Internet Twitter universe it is especially nice to receive a thank you card signed by real people. I say thank you to the Bovina youth for your thoughtfulness. Keep up the good work.

Jean Terry called about two recent deaths in her family with Friona connections. Wayne Edwards died March 20 in Amarillo. He was married to Jean’s sister, Karen Hughes Edwards. They were married August 5, 1966 in Friona.

Wilbur Dean Moore died March 27 in Dumas. He was married to Lawanna Houlette Moore for 52 years. She is Jean’s niece. Her granddad ran a laundry in Friona for many years. Jean said Lawanna played basketball in Friona on Baker Duggins’ state champion teams. She will be moving from Dumas to Amarillo. Thank you Mrs. Terry for sharing this information.

The senior class banquet at Calvary Baptist Church will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday April 14. I heard it rumored that the churches might get together and hold only one church banquet for seniors each year instead of four or five. The banquet would rotate among the local churches. Seems like a good idea to me. Graduating seniors have a hectic spring schedule.

The Friona Cemetery Association will meet Thursday April 17 at 3:00 p.m. for their annual meeting. We are fortunate to have folks like John Fred White, Martha Hamilton, Holly Campbell, Mary Joyce Barnett, and Elizabeth McLellan who work hard to keep our cemetery up-to-date and organized. I am glad we have an association that cares about our cemetery and the families of those buried there. A cemetery clean-up day is scheduled for Thursday May 15 at 5:00 p.m. and volunteers will be appreciated.

See you at the senior steak dinner Sunday. Coach Styler Haddock has notified us the baseball game at Bushland next week has been changed from Tuesday to Wednesday because the boys regional golf is Monday and Tuesday in Odessa. Lot of action between now and graduation. We will try to keep up. Until then!
