The Gospel Gathering is Wednesday September 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. Free admission. Donations will be collected at the Gospel Gathering for the local SnackPak4Kids program. They would like to have 16 oz jars of peanut butter, Pop Tarts, or cash. There will be containers at the high school for donations. Please help.

The Chieftain homecoming game is Friday September 20 vs. Idalou. The homecoming queen will be crowned before the game so plan to be there by around 7 p.m. Cargill will be giving away free burgers, chips, and drinks to everyone at the homecoming game. Another reason to get there early.

The Dixon Six Mile walk/run/bike will start at 8:00 a.m. Saturday September 21 on Hwy 214 north. Choose six mile or two mile events. Finish line is at Hwy 60 and 214. Just show up. No charge to participants and trophies to winners. For info call Jim Dixon at 295-6392 or 265-7685.

I went over Tuesday to visit with the high school yearbook staff to talk about photography. Tried to give the students tips on how to take good photos for the yearbook. Coach Cindy Moreno is the yearbook advisor this year. She takes over from Allison Johnston who did the job for the past few years. The yearbook is really a history book in which we browse many years from now. Good luck yearbook staff.

As a hint to school officials that approve such things, the yearbook people could use a couple of new cameras. The old Canons they have used for years are about worn out. Budget a couple of new Nikons with at least one really good zoom lens. Just saying.

Becky and Mike Riethmayer, happy 44th anniversary to you. To a couple of our favorite people, happy 20th anniversary to Casey and Terry Sharrock. If you or someone you know has an anniversary let us know. Our readers enjoy sharing your joy.

Not sure if it is because of the Sonic closing but Subway is offering any size $1.00 drinks between 2-5 p.m. every day.

Last Thursday I traveled to Amy D’s Restaurant in Texico to have lunch with Congressman Randy Neugebauer and a group of officials from Parmer and Castro County. The congressman was conducting a series of town hall meetings in the Panhandle. We had the opportunity over burgers and chicken fried steaks to chat with him about Syria, the farm bill, wind energy, and other topics. Photo of us on the front page.

Once again, hats off to Chris Alexander and Betty Lamb at the Chamber and the ladies who volunteer to help decorate and organize the Miss Friona Pageant. Coach Daniel Hutchins served as master of ceremonies. (I should say hats off to Daniel too. He has lost near 100 pounds over the past few months.) All of the girls were super in their talent and evening wear. Thanks again to Tricia Etue, Britny Pope, Annette Loflin, Karla Rector, Lezlie St. Clair, Adriana Stowers, and D’Lynn Jamerson, members of the Miss Friona Committee.

The band boosters are raffling a Westinghouse flat screen 40” TV. Tickets will be sold at the volleyball games, junior high and varsity football games and in the park on Maize Days. Tickets are also available from band booster members or call 363-0377. They are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Don’t forget about the blood drive next Thursday, September 19. It is noon to 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist. See details elsewhere in today’s Star.

Anybody interested in participating in the Gospel Gathering next Wednesday evening should contact Rev. Brett Hoyle at First Baptist Church.

Andy Montana says Friona will have a 5th and 6th grade flag football team playing at the YMCA in Hereford. If there are any kids interested in playing call Andy at 806-247-2290. Forms need to be turned in this weekend.

The Friona Class of 1963 is having their 60th reunion here during Maize Days. They have invited the Class of 1964 to join them. Mary Joyce Barnett says she has 24 RSVPs already. One classmate, Roy Haney, is traveling 1100 miles from Illinois to be here. They will attend the homecoming game, see the parade, then have lunch on Saturday at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall.

This is the anniversary week of the 9-11 terrorist attack. It has been 12 years already. A TV station interviewed a man this morning who lost his wife in the attack. He said they never found her remains. His two boys are now 30 and 27. One of many tragic stories. It is difficult on many levels to listen to the reports and see the towers in flames once again. God Bless America.

There is so much going on this month in our town I probably left something out this week. Hope not. We try to post pertinent events and other stuff on our Friona Star Fan Page on Facebook. Right now we are near 1,600 folks who have ‘liked’ our page. Search us and ‘like’ us and stay up-to-date on Friona happenings. Thank you. See ya soon. Until then!
