Running wind sprints are part of football practice. Head coach Mike Prokop oversees the running at the end of Monday practice. The Chiefs travel to Panhandle Saturday August 17 for a scrimmage. Season opener is August 30 vs. Stratford at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo. Game time is 4:30 p.m. Meet the Chiefs is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday August 20 at Chieftain Field. Come out, support the Chiefs and Squaws, and get ready for another season of FHS athletics.

It was a cloudy, cool, rainy fried eggs and sausage kind of Sunday morning this week. Folks woke up to a slow rain and cool weather. What a nice August morning. Official weather guy John Gurley said we received 4.04” of rain in July. In August so far (as of Monday) we have received .74” with more forecast all this week. Latest: Gurley said we received .29 in Friona Tuesday night and they had .70 at 10-mile corner. (more...)
Council approves tax rate, lets bids
The Friona city council met in regular session Monday August 12. Councilman Greg Lewellen was absent. Mayor Rick White presided.
Police Chief Frank Mooney told the council that local enforcement activity has increased. He said the department has an opening for an officer with the resignation of Sgt. Waters. Applications will be taken until September 13. The chief also said he was applying for a grant to construct a safe room facility near the community center that will accommodate between 700-1,000 people and he is still waiting on grant information to hire a school resource officer. Mayor's Minutes

I would like to begin this months minutes by discussing the difference between a “City” and a “Community”. I am reading a book, “The Gift of a Community”. (author Gary D. McCaleb) . Gary was the Mayor of Abilene, TX.. for 9 years. He looked at the “City” and the “Community” through two separate lenses. The “City” represented the tangible and the measurable: streets, concrete, asphalt and the “Community” represented the intangibles that was more difficult to measure: respect, compassion and trust. Both “City” and “Community” are important. Both must be given attention by the concerned citizens, elected officials and the non-elected leaders.
