Gurley to be full time county prosecutor
Friona native Kathryn Gurley, the District Attorney for Parmer and Bailey counties, will give up private practice to become a full time county prosecutor effective September 1, 2013. Mrs. Gurley will not take on private clients after that date. She will have one year after September 1 to settle her current private practice cases.
She said the Parmer/Bailey district is one of only a few in Texas without a full time professional prosecutor. Districts with full time prosecutors qualify for increased state funding, one reason the decision was made.
She said mixing District Court trial dates and private practice had often caused problems and inconvenience for her private clients. She is in the first year of a four-year term as District Attorney and will be up for re-election in 2016. She will continue to office in Friona.
Expenses for the full time prosecutor will be split 60-40 between Parmer and Bailey counties.
