Eleven-twelve-thirteen. They say lots of couples got married on 11-12-13 and it will be 100 years before another 11-12-13. The date this week (Tuesday) brought freezing temperatures to the area with a smattering of rain and some frost on windshields. Guess we got a hint of winter.

At the December 2 Christmas in the Park, the best tree lighting winner will be determined by donating 16 oz peanut butter and/or Pop Tarts for the SnackPak4Kids program. A box will be placed at each tree and the most items collected will be the winner.

Angie Gonzalez, the friendly lady at our Donut Shop, has started selling panaderia, Mexican breads, from 5 - 8 p.m. Monday-Friday. Yes that is PM. She says she will have several varieties, sweet and salty. Stop by on your way home from work and check it out. I’ll bet it is good.

Andrea Phipps has been named the general manager at Cargill Cattle Feeders.

Mitch Terry has filed to run for Precinct 2 County Commissioner. Current Precinct 2 commissioner James Clayton is not running for re-election. The filing period for county offices is now to December 9.

Project Christmas Card will kick off next week. Containers for donations will be located at local businesses or you can donate to the account at Friona Interbank. This year the donations, sponsored by the hospital auxiliary, will be used to purchase a mannequin for the PMC staff to use for life support training and advanced cardiac certification. The cost of the mannequin is $3,500 so your donations will be greatly appreciated and needed. Donors will be listed in our December 19 Christmas edition of the Star.

Don’t forget the band’s brisket dinner Sunday at the junior high cafeteria. Tickets are $8 and the brisket will be guaranteed good.

The eCycle trailer is in place behind city hall Monday-Friday until December 13 for free disposal of your electronic items, TVs, computers, monitors, printers, etc. Only electronics please.

The Empty Stocking Fund providing clothes, shoes, and a toy to needy children is accepting donations at Friona Interbank or contact Peggy Monroe. The fund serves many needy children to help with a brighter Christmas. Children are selected by teachers, the clothes etc. are delivered to the schools and privately disbursed.

TxDOT will spend $3,262,223.62 rehabilitating a 6.8 mile stretch of FM 1172 from FM2397 to SH86. Gilvin-Terrell, LTD of Amarillo was awarded the contract to make the improvements. No definite schedules have been set but work is expected to begin in early 2014.

Did you notice the new paint job on the front of Chieftain Sports & Fitness building at Main and 60? Trista and Tommy Stallings have painted the front of the building a nice gray color with painted red bricks interspersed along the front. Looks nice.

I spotted a huge Reese’s Peanut Butter candy bar at Fast Stop for $15.99. Esperanza said they had sold a couple of them. There was a big Snickers there a while back for $9.99. Hope Mrs. Obama doen’t find out.

The Friona Noon Lions Club is selling tickets to win a Browning BPS Hunter 12 Gauge Shotgun. Tickets are $10 each. Ricky Barnett says it is a $600 value. I have tickets here at the Star office. Drawing is at the Noon Lions meeting on December 19, just in time for Christmas. Stop by or give me a call or see any Lions member.

If you are saving Lowe’s receipts for the primary or elementary school, you can drop them off at the Chamber of Commerce office. Might be easier than parking around the schools.

Once again the Friona High School students and teachers did an outstanding job with the Veterans Day program. Kudos to the choirs and band for the excellent program. Many veterans and families and friends were present. I continue to be amazed at the talents of our students. What a great program. Pat yourselves on the back.

Next Thursday, November 21, is the Friona Blood Drive at Calvary Baptist Church from noon to 7 p.m. Details are elsewhere in this Star. Look for the Coffee Memorial ad.

Friona firemen and EMS were dispatched at midnight last Thursday to an accident on 5th Street and again at 3:30 p.m. Friday to a grass fire. Thanks to our volunteers for their service to our community.

Check out the ad also for the community gathering Saturday evening at the community center for a meal and viewing of the Billy Graham video. The entire community is invited to come share the fellowship.
