Mark your calendar for Halloween Thursday October 31. The annual Trunk or Treat will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. A second Trunk or Treat location is being organized on Euclid Street in front of the cafeteria from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Chamber is giving prizes to Best Decorated vehicle and Best Costume. Businesses and citizens are invited to bring candy, pencils, pens, balloons, cheese, or other items to hand out.
The night before, Wednesday October 30, Victory Family Worship Center will have their coat giveaway for needy children at the church, 9th and Washington.

Next week, October 21-25 will be Red Ribbon Week in Friona Schools. The annual Red Ribbon Week is a drug free week program. The Friona Primary/Elementary will have the following Red Ribbon Days: Monday, We will ‘knot’ do drugs. Wear scarves or ties; Tuesday, Use Your Head, wear wigs or crazy hair; Wednesday, Yee Haw Day, dress western; Thursday, Be happy happy happy, dress like Duck Dynasty characters, wear camouflage etc; Friday, team up against drugs, wear red or shirts/jerseys of your favorite team. Friona Elementary will have homeroom Red Ribbon parties.

A note to our farmers, ranchers, and ag producers: Kinky Friedman is running for Texas Agriculture Commissioner again as a Democrat. Just saying you might want to keep your voter registration current. I would think a guy who wanted credibility might consider reverting to whatever his real name is instead of Kinky. Especially as you get older and want folks to take you serious. Just a suggestion.

Blood drive dates for 2014, per Bessie Holt: January 30, April 10, June 19, August 28, November 6. Bessie thought some folks might want to go ahead and get them on the calendar. Which reminds me that I need to think about getting 2014 calendars.

Friona junior high thanks everyone who helped to make the cookie dough sale a huge success. Principal Mark Sundre said, “This was one of the most successful sales we have had in the past six years. The orders have been placed and we expect the cookie dough to arrive by October 30. Again, thank you for your continued support.”

The FHS Chieftain Band will have their annual brisket dinner on Sunday November 17 at the junior high cafeteria. St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bovina will host their annual turkey and dressing dinner Sunday November 3 at the parish hall. That is the same day Daylight Saving Time ends sand we turn back the clocks an hour.

The Chieftain Booster Club bonfire last Thursday was canceled because of the wind and will be rescheduled.

A friend I know in Hereford, a single mom, is faced with a $36,000 helicopter bill after her teenage son was flown from Hereford to Lubbock. He had surgery in Lubbock, came home but suffered an emergency and took the helicopter ride back to Lubbock. The insurance won’t pay she says.

Parmer County Clerk Colleen Stover says she will not seek reelection next year. The primary will be in March and election in November 2014.

The Squaws defeated Olton Tuesday night and now have a 3-2 district record with three games to play against Dimmitt, Littlefield, and Tulia. It is a five team district and four teams go to the playoffs. The last home game is Saturday October 26 vs. Dimmitt which will be senior parents day. Varsity game time is 1:30 p.m.
