Happy and Holy Easter to everyone. The annual Easter egg hunt in the city park will not be held this year. Calvary Baptist pastor Bobby Broughton is battling cancer and is due to have surgery soon. These complications have caused the church to postpone the Easter egg hunt for this year.

Congratulations to Trey Hurst. The 17-year-old son of Clint and Shannon Hurst showed the Reserve Grand Champion All Other Breeds steer at the Houston Stock Show. At the auction Trey's steer, named Trump, sold for $335,000. It was reported in a press release that Trey will receive about $40,000 of the sale price. The balance of auction sales goes to an Inner City Scholarship fund. Seems to me the kids get the short end of that deal. Trey is the grandson of Bob and Roxanne Hurst.

Anybody remember the Sunday fried chicken dinners the local VFW Post used to serve? Came across a write-up in an old Friona Star about them. The cost back then, in 1994, was $5.00. They were very popular and very good. I especially remember the gravy. They served them in the fall months because the VFW Hall did not have air-conditioning.

The FHS all-sports banquet will be held May 16. The meal this year will be catered by Canna Ray which is good news for everybody. I'm told it will be brisket, baked potato and stuff. More details about the banquet later.

For the first time since 1968 a full black background license plate with white lettering is now available. The design has proven to be popular with 1,400 plates preordered. In other news the license plate with the word ALAMO was recently auctioned for $10,250. If you want a black background plate check with Bobbie Pierson and staff in the Tax Assessor's Office in Farwell.

The Chieftain baseball team is on a bit of a streak. They won three games last weekend and were champions of the Nazareth Tournament. They beat Tulia, Nazareth, and Slaton. Tuesday they beat San Jacinto 16-6. District play starts Tuesday March 29 at Shallowater followed by Muleshoe here Saturday April 2. The district games will be broadcast live on KNNK 100.5 FM, WT Services channel 6, or online at knnkradio.com. KNNK's Vic Holguin will be the announcer. Good luck Chiefs.

I was at Tuesday's Chieftain baseball game taking pictures. Getting interesting baseball pictures is a challenge because you can't get very close to the action and you never quite know where the action will be. I ventured into the dugout for an inning to try for some third base shots. While looking through the lens at a runner coming to third, the ball was overthrown to third and hit the wall inside the dugout about three feet from me. Made a big noise, the kids in the dugout hit the deck, and I counted my blessings as I made my way back to a safer spot.

Ladies remember the annual Spring Luncheon April 30 at the First Baptist Church. It starts at 11:00 a.m. Bring a dessert or salad. It's for ladies. Guess I won't be there. Until then!
