Town Talk II

by Ron Carr

December is here and so is cold weather. Better bundle up Monday for Christmas in the Park when Santa will arrive about 5:30 p.m. There will be booths with snacks and hot chocolate and a Christmas light parade about dark. Bring a canned good to vote for your favorite tree.

Speaking of Santa, Bobby Thompson has bought a Santa suit and has decided to hire out for Santa activities. If you are having a party or other event and need a Santa to show up give Bobby a call at 265-7424. Ho ho ho!

The National Anthem takes about two minutes or so to sing properly. Some singers inject different styles into the singing. At the Thanksgiving game between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, Aretha Franklin delivered the most God-awful version I have ever heard. It took her 4:35 minutes to sing the anthem and to these old ears most of her words were unintelligible. Just sing the song please. I like the trumpet instrumental version played before Cowboy home games.

Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sunday. Some businesses will close on Monday Dec 26 and Jan 2. Closed will be city hall, the banks, clinic, hospital business office, and drug store. Any other businesses closing on those days and would like to have it mentioned let us know.

We have copies of Friona on Parade for sale here at the Star office. It is The Academic and Athletic History of Friona ISD 1908-2005. It was authored by the late Bill Ellis, Friona Star publisher for 40+ years. When Friona on Parade was released in 2006 the price was $60.00. Carol Ellis recently found several boxes of Friona on Parade in her basement. We are helping her get rid of the rest of the books and are selling them for only $5.00. It is an interesting and fact-filled book with many old and new photos. Buy one for yourself or Christmas gifts. We are open Monday-Wednesday from 9:00 to 5:00.

A front page headline in the November 22 Amarillo Globe-News read “WT athletics gets $1M donation.” It said Bob and Mary Stewart gave the $1 million to establish the Bob and Mary Stewart Athletic Scholarship Endowment. The article mentioned Bob Stewart grew up in Friona.

He is a Class of 1965 graduate of FHS. His parents are Emma Lou and the late Allen Stewart, who owned a jewelry business in Friona for many years. His mother Emma Lou still lives here. Bob Stewart is a CPA and worked for 35 years as the chief engineer officer for GSM Enterprises.

What a tribute to our town to claim this distinguished graduate.

They are seeking information on anyone who has recently roofed their house or if you have seen someone hauling old roofing material. Call the Sheriff’s office at 806-481-3303 or Crime Stoppers.
