Friona high school senior Chieftain Edgar Guerrero is the back-to-back state champion in powerlifting held Saturday March 28 in Abilene. Edgar had totals of 760 in squat, 455 in bench, and 675 in deadlift, a total of 1,890 lbs., a new personal record. He finishes his high school career ranked #3 strongest lifter in the state across all classes.

These five young ladies, Nastassia Luna, Airam Chavez, Christina Green, Arianna Moreno, and Celeste Rivas-Flores, made up the 4X200 Meter Relay and 4X400 Meter Relay teams that took first place in both events at the Dimmitt Track Meet last week. Chavez, Green, Luna and Moreno ran a 1:51.94 4X200 Meter Relay. Rivas-Flores, Chavez, Moreno and Green ran a 4:20.20 in the 4X400 Meter Relay.

Congratulations to Friona hometown boy Jimmy Arias. He is the new Friona ISD Athletic Director/Head Coach. The decision was made after a late night school board meeting Monday. The candidates for the position were narrowed to four. They were interviewed Monday evening in a school board meeting that lasted until after midnight. Jimmy is a FHS graduate who has been an assistant coach and teaches world geography. He will not be teaching when the 2015-16 school year begins. Jimmy is married to Carrie, a special ed teacher. They have five children. Congratulations to Jimmy and family. I think it was a good choice.

The first grade Tiger Cubs Troop 56 and their parents visited the Friona Star office on Monday, March 30 to learn about how the newspaper is created and printed. Friona firefighters were called to a fire in the 600 block of Euclid Sunday evening about 8:00 p.m. The fire started at the rear of a residence but was quickly put out by the firemen, avoiding a potentially disastrous result. No cause of the fire was given.
