FRIONA WEATHER

Back in Action - The Clarence Monroe Community Center is open for business. In fact, a couple of events have already been held in the newly remodeled venue. A car show will be the main attraction inside the center during the Cheeseburger Festival on July 20th. Planning is underway for the next phase of improvements which could include a new ceiling, new sound system, more parking, and indoor/outdoor artwork.

Town Talk

A Note from Pastor Brett at First Baptist Church - In last week's Friona Star you may have noticed the picture of the wonderful playground at Cottonwood Apartments on the front page. This was made possible by generous donations from many in our community, but it would not have come to fruition without the leadership of Pastor David and the Friona Methodist Church. They were gracious in allowing others to come alongside them in this idea and make it a reality. Thank you Pastor David and FMC for your leadership in blessing the kids at Cottonwood with a new playground!

Dust in the Wind - A huge cloud of Saharan dust is coming to parts of Texas, and another is close behind. This annual summer phenomenon reduces air quality and humidity but can produce spectacular sunrises and sunsets. During the summer months, hot air lifts sand from Africa's Sahara Desert high into the atmosphere, where strong winds carry it across the Atlantic Ocean. According to NASA, about 182 million tons of dust from Africa are swept away every year. This week's Saharan Air Layer is the first of the year. It typically subsides after the middle of August.
