Max Self, 95, of Friona, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. A Graveside Service was held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 11:00 A.M., at the Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery in Muleshoe, Texas, under the direction of Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford.
Max was born on May 12, 1929, in Kiowa County, Oklahoma to Otha and Veta (Goodwin) Self. He graduated from Muleshoe High School. Max served in the United States Army from 1951-1952. He married Dorothy (Harris) Self on June 11, 1955. Max and Dorothy were residents of Friona from 1961-1984. They moved to Gibtown, Jack County where Max farmed and ranched till 2002. After retirement Max and Dorothy moved to Dimmitt and resided there from 2002-2018. Max moved back to the Friona area and lived in Bootleg for the last 5 years.
Max was a hardworking, independent, kind man. He enjoyed his work as a farmer and rancher and the long hours cultivating his land and during retirement he enjoyed yardwork, gardening, and time spent with family.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children, Gayla Brown and her husband David of Bootleg, Texas; Gary Self and his wife Faith of Childress, Texas; and Terry Self and his wife Fran of Perrin, Texas; nine grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Otha and Veta Self, wife Dorothy Self, and sister Dolores Ivy.
Sylvia Raymond, 69, of Canyon, Texas went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2024, at home surrounded by loved ones. Sylvia was born in Burnet, Texas on December 11, 1954, to Domingo and Elena Hernandez. At age six she was blessed with her dad Conrado Perez Sr.
Sylvia married the late Roman Garcia Sr. and together they had three children: Roman, Margie, and Christi. She later married Steve Raymond, gaining two more children: Amy and Jeremy. They resided in Friona, Texas before moving to Colorado, then Oklahoma. Upon retirement they moved to Canyon, Texas. They were married for 34 years.
Sylvia was a hard worker. She worked at Cargill for 29 years and Memorial Hospital of Texas County for 11 years. She was a devoted Christian who enjoyed teaching Sunday school, singing on the praise and worship team, and serving wherever she was needed. She loved family vacations, puzzles, and reading. She will be remembered for her servant's heart, positive attitude, and beautiful smile.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Those to carry on her legacy include her husband Steve Raymond of Canyon, Texas; five children: Roman (Jessica) Garcia of Friona, Texas, Margie Garcia of San Antonio, Texas, Christi (Fredie) Merino of Canyon, Texas, Amy (Edgar) Hernandez of Mineola, Texas, and Jeremy (Angie) Raymond of Friona, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren with one on the way; seven brothers: Henry Hernandez, Manuel Hernandez, Conrado Perez Jr., Garry Hernandez, Ricky Hernandez, Sonny Hernandez, John Hernandez, and three sisters: Terry Coburn, Sally Aguirre, and Rachel Prieto.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to BSA Hospice of the Southwest: D'Dee, Lindsey, Brenda, and volunteer sitter Charlie.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, June 28, 2024, at Templo Damasco, 403 Woodland St., Friona, Texas 79035.
