The Friona Squaws powered their way to their third straight District 3-3A Championship last week at Mustang Stadium in Denver City. A great mix of short distance runners, long distance runners, relay teams, and field event competitors had made the Squaws a competitive force the past few years. Only the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut everything down in 2020, has kept the Squaws from the top of the podium. The Area track meet will be held on Thursday, April 21st in Denver City.
The Silver Bullets — With a balanced attack and strong relay teams, the Friona Chieftains powered their way to a second place finish at the District 3-3A Championships last week at Mustang Stadium in Denver City. Anchored by the school record breaking 4x200 relay team, the Chieftains will look for another strong performance at the Area track meet on Thursday, April 21st in Denver City. See district results page 10.
FYI — A Memorial Service for Roger Gee will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23rd, at the 6th Street Church of Christ.

"To be, or not to be" — On April 23rd each year, National Talk Like Shakespeare Day encourages people to speak like the Bard and the characters in his plays. William Shakespeare (April 1564 - April 23, 1616) is the author of some of the world's most celebrated plays and poems.
You can speak like Shakespeare by substituting thou, thee, and ye for you and they. Rhyming couplets and creative insults were his particular favorites. To speak "Southern Shakespeare" just throw in a "you all" or a "fixin' to" and you will be the talk of the town.

Heads up — As mentioned earlier, this is a possibility of a newsprint shortage in the country. Any and all sizes of newsprint will be consumed in the coming months. It is possible that the Friona Star newspaper may be a little wider or taller due to the need to use whatever paper is available.

National Audubon Day — honors the birth of John James Audubon (April 26, 1785 - January 27, 1851). Audubon was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter noted for his extensive studies of American birds and his detailed illustrations of the birds in their natural habitats. His greatest work was The Birds of America which is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. The book contains more than 700 North American bird species with 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at last count approximately 45 million people watch birds.
