The City of Friona will host a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Training Event on Saturday, April 23rd. The all-day training session for Parmer County first responders will be conducted at multiple locations. Helicopters, ambulances, fire trucks, an AmBus, and other emergency vehicles will all be on hand for the training.
Friona EMS Director Nik Baucom told the Friona Star that he was asking for people to help by loaning vehicles, serving as "patients", and working as make-up artists to help with the re-enactments.
For more information, please contact Nik Baucom or Michael Taylor at 806-250-5655.
With a time of 1:30.78, the Chieftain 4x200 relay team of Bryan Chavira, Alan Martinez, Kade Crosby, and Jacob Bautista broke the school record last week at the Bobcat Relays track meet in Dimmitt. The previous record of 1:32.03 was set in 2014 by Abel Palacios, Adrian Munoz, Justin Rocha, and Jose Zamudio.
Identity Theft? — we had a name wrong in the cutline for a picture on the front page of last week's Star. We "cut & pasted" Monte Schueler instead of Michael Rushing. Monte was at the meeting and even won a door prize but was not in the photo. Michael was in the photo but did not win a door prize. The Friona Star took the photo and won a door prize.

April — the name is derived from the Latin word aperit, which means "to open." In the Northern Hemisphere, April is a part of the growing season. The sun warms the earth, awakening the plants and blossoms and leaves "open" bright and new. It is also believed the month is named after the Greek goddess, Aphrodite (Aphros).
April wasn't always the fourth month. Originally, the Roman calendar placed the month second. It became the fourth month consisting of only 29 days when January was designated the first month of the year around 450 BCE. April became 30 days long again when Julius Caesar reformed the calendar.
April is also the second month of spring and the old saying "April showers bring May flowers" is a wish for both gardeners and farmers alike. April's full moon is called the Pink Moon and represents the pink phlox flower that blooms in April. When the Pink Moon is also the first full moon of spring it is called the Paschal moon.
