Kevin McKelvy was a Christ follower, business owner, aerobatic pilot, skydiver, scuba diver, avid skier, motorcyclist, passionate Red Raider fan, loving son, loyal husband, loving brother, a proud father, and an adoring grandfather!
Kevin is survived by his mother, Maxine McKelvy of Lubbock, his wife, Lana Renner McKelvy of 41 years from Lubbock, his son Cody McKelvy and wife Tyler Clemmons McKelvy, along with their two daughters Maxine and Finley McKelvy of Dallas, his sister Katherine Miller, her daughter Summer Bridwell, and Katherine's husband David Miller of Horseshoe Bay, and brother Robert McKelvy Jr. of Lubbock.
Kevin was born in Lubbock on September 25th, 1955, to Robert Sr. and Maxine McKelvy. In his youth he loved going fast behind a boat or down a ski slope, playing sports, and hunting or fishing with his father and grandfather. Kevin attended Monterey High School, Texas Tech University, and South Plains College where he received his associates degree in mechanics. He then moved to Colorado to further develop his snow skiing prowess. Kevin moved back home and began farming in 1978.
In 1981, Kevin married Lana Renner and a year later they welcomed their only child, Cody. After six years of farming, Kevin teamed up with his father, Robert Sr., and forged McKelvy Trucking in 1983, running cotton from Lubbock to the Carolinas and returning with furniture for McKelvy Furniture and other local retailers. During this season of Kevin's life his adrenaline was fueled by his Christen Eagle, an aerobatic sporting biplane that Kevin flew both recreationally and competitively. When he wasn't flying a plane or riding one of many Harley Davidson bikes over the years, he was driving a big rig for McKelvy Transportation, which he operated until 2017. He then continued to drive for others until May of 2022 when he hung up his CDL and retired. Between runs he was rooting for Texas Tech athletics or cheering for Max and Finn on the sidelines of various youth sports complexes. Earlier this year Kevin joined the Flatlander H.O.G. family, sharing his passion for motorcycle riding and building a community of likeminded friends.
Of all the things that Kevin loved, he was most passionate about Jesus. The unwavering faith he exhibited throughout his life provides those he leaves behind tremendous comfort that he is in heaven, healthy and whole. A celebration of Kevin's life will be held at Spirit Ranch on Sunday, November 6th at 1:30 p.m.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or Casa Esparaza of Albuquerque, or your charity of choice in Kevin's memory.
