The heat will be on this weekend as Friona celebrates the 65th edition of Maize Days. Boots & Bling are the theme but a hat & sunscreen will be advisable since weather forecasters are predicting near triple digit temperatures for the weekend. The festivities kickoff Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Chieftain Field when the Homecoming Queen will be announced followed by Chiefs versus Mules football.
The Maize Days parade will roll down Main Street at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning with parade announcer Jim Bob Jones providing color commentary. A Bed Race will be conducted and there will be vendors and food available in the park. The Friona Volunteer Fire Department will conduct their "50 for 50" drawing and will also have sausage wraps for purchase.
The Miss Friona Scholarship Pageant will start at 3:00 p.m. in the Friona High School Auditorium. The Little Miss contest will also be a part of the pageant. Emcees for the events will be Sabre Cofer and Mark Aldrich.
The Friona All School reunion will commence at 6:00 p.m. at the Friona Community Center. The event will feature a recognition of the 20th Anniversary of 9-11 attack. Desperados of Amarillo is catering the meal. The weekend celebration concludes with a Youth Fishing Day at Reeve Lake from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Sheriff Randy Geries is shown conducting launches at "Mission Control" during last week's scout sign-up event in the city park. Farm Bureau of Parmer County officials took a field trip to the Elementary school on Tuesday to deliver red "nap sacks" to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. The totes will be used by the students to carry their textbooks and/or chromebooks. Farm Bureau representatives included Board of Directors President Alan Monroe, VP J'Lond Jarecki, Agency Manager Mitchell Smiley, and Agent Veca Masters.

Tailgate Party Review— Thanks to the Booster Club, Cargill, and the Friona Noon Lions Club for providing the free hamburgers and french fries at the tailgate party before last week's football game. The Booster Club cooked over 1,400 hamburgers with meat donated by Cargill, and the Lions Club cooked 500 pounds of their "World Famous" french fries.

Book Shop will be open — The Friends of the Library Book Shop will be open Saturday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Enjoy all the Maize Days festivities and stop the new book shop to cool off and catch a good bargain on used books. The book shop is located at 618 Euclid, right behind the library, and books sell for only one dollar a bag.

Final Call for Steak Dinner tickets — Tickets for the Parmer County Steak Dinner are still available. The event will take place on Saturday, September 11th at 6:30 p.m. in the XIT Center in Bovina, Texas. Tickets are $100 which includes two meals. Grain accident — A Clovis man was killed in an elevator accident Tuesday afternoon in Bovina. City and County first responders worked together in dangerous circumstances, but could not save the victim. More details next week.
