Cancer Coalition begins 11th year

It seems like that for the past year the Covid-19 pandemic has blotted out the sun. For those battling cancer, it has not. Just like Covid, everyone is touched by cancer. It can be personal or a family member or friend battling the illness. You either have cancer yourself or know someone who does. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine.

The Parmer County Cancer Coalition was founded in 2010. This year marks their 11th year of operation. Board Chairman Greg Lewellen said that since 2010, the organization has given out 201 grants totaling $102,100 to cancer survivors in Parmer County. "We average about 20 grants a year and we annually contribute a percentage of our money raised to the American Cancer Society."

He continued, "Our Board has allocated 15% of the yearly revenue to be given to the ACS this year. They have also approved raising the grant amount from $500 to $1,000 this year."

The PCCC is also looking forward to having a "Pink Out" Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October this year at all county home football and volleyball games. A Survivor Dinner will also be scheduled for November. Unfortunately, both were scaled back or cancelled last year because of Covid-19 pandemic.

An application form to receive a grant can be found here.

Members of the Parmer County Cancer Coalition Board of Directors are: Greg Lewellen, Chairman (Friona); JoDonna Terry, Vice-Chair (Lazbuddie); Jamie Lewellen (Friona); Rhonda Wilkins (Friona); Mike Prather (Bovina); Tracy Ellis (Friona); Randy Geries (Farwell); Martha Rodriguez (Friona); Magali Moralez (Friona); and Leander Davila (Friona).
