Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced that he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $1.07 billion in local sales tax allocations for November, 20.6 percent more than in November 2020. These allocations are based on sales made in September by businesses that report tax monthly, and on sales made in July, August and September by quarterly filers.
The City of Friona will receive $62,790.83 for the month of November. This represents a 35.26% increase over the $46,418.91 received in November 2020. So far in 2021, Friona has received $547,649.03 in sales tax allocation. This amount represents a 12.93% increase over the $484,935.24 received in 2020 during the same time period. The Friona Economic Development Corporation will receive $15,697.71 of the allocation for its operations.
Choir accompanist Kim Smiley shows off the brand new Yamaha upright grand piano which was recently donated to the Friona Choir Program by Bryan and Allison Johnston, of Canyon. Allison retired last year after serving 19 years in the school district. In 2003, she restarted the FHS choir program which had been dormant for many years and served as Director. Bryan is a past member of the FISD Board of Trustees and is a 1978 FHS graduate.

Giving Thanks — The Annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be Sunday, November 21, at 6:00 p.m, at the Friona United Methodist Church. The holiday service is hosted by the Friona Christian Ministries, and is an uplifting time of worshipping the Lord Jesus as a community of believers. The offering that is taken is used to help people throughout the year in our community with basic needs. Those who would like to be a part of the Community Choir need to be at the Methodist Church at 5:30 p.m. Also, there will be a fellowship with snacks and drinks afterwards that everyone is invited to stay for.

The Parmer County Cancer Coalition hosted its annual Survivor Dinner last Thursday, at the 6th Street Church of Christ in Friona. Approximately thirty-five attendees enjoyed a meal of brisket, ribs, and all the fixin's catered by Vaqueros Smokehouse of Friona. Board of Directors Chairman Greg Lewellen gave a brief overview of the past year's events. An application form for cancer patients to receive a grant from the coalition can be found on the Friona Star website at www.frionaonline.com under the Forms & Schedules tab.
