The Friona Public Library will be soliciting bids for the new Library Book Shop. The nine hundred square foot facility will be located on the site of the current library garden. The new Book Shop will be accessible from inside the Friona Public Library and via the store front on Euclid Avenue.
"This new location will be close to 3-times as large as the current book shop and give visitors, students, and other local groups the opportunity to gather in a larger space," said City Manager Lee Davila. "I've met with our city staff, library team, Friends of the Library President, and Library Board President to assure we took everyone's needs into consideration." Meet the new Ag teachers (l-r): Mark Edens, Maggie Roque, and Tyler Hatley
Friona ISD announced the addition of three new Ag teachers for the upcoming school year. Mark Edens has 39 years of teaching experience with 19 years in agriculture. He has a Masters Degree from Texas Tech University and is a native of Clint, Texas which is south of El Paso. Mark will oversee the Ag Department. Tyler Hatley is a native of Shallowater and has three years of teaching experience. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University and his specialty is welding. Maggie Roque is a native of Amherst and is starting her "rookie" year in the education field. She is a graduate of Texas Tech University and her specialty is Floriculture. All three agreed that their goal is to build a "World Class" ag program at FHS.
The 2020 Friona Chieftain football team will feature three of the fastest athletes in the area. Running backs Malachi Torres (left), Jacob Bautista (right) and quarterback Bryan Chavira (center) will give defensive coordinators a lot to think about when trying to develop a game plan. All three, along with Eduardo Chavez, were on the 4x100M relay team last spring. Friona is scheduled to scrimmage Bushland on Thursday, August 20th in Bushland.

The Prairie Acres "Resident of the Month" for August is Lorraine Jarecki. The "Employee of the Month" is Esmeralda Rangel. Esmeralda works in the housekeeping department and has been with Prairie Acres since June 2020. Also, Larry Kelly celebrated a birthday on August 1st and Zaylin Campos on August 5th. Prarie Acres is still under visitor restrictions and screens all employees for symptoms before they enter the building. Also, aggressive infection control techniques are being utilized and all new (or hospitalized) residents must undergo a quarantine for 2 weeks.

In the original 10 month Roman calendar, August was the sixth month with 30 days and was originally named Sextilis. In 8 BC, the Roman Senate rewarded Octavian Augustus a month in his honor. The founder and first emperor of the Roman Empire selected Sextilis, which under the Julian calendar was the eighth month with the addition of January and February. Renamed to Augustus, there remained the issue of the month having fewer days than Julius (July). Whether Octavian adjusted the number of days to match that of July is uncertain, but the result left February with 28 days except in a leap year and September and November each gave up a day to October and December to avoid a trifecta of 31 days in a row. For hubris or pride or both, the Julian calendar came to be. Today, August is the eighth month of the modern calendar with 31 days.

Peridot is a semi-precious olive or lime-green stone found in lava flows and veins from the United States to Finland and Pakistan, among others. Found in shades of pink, red, blue, violet, and lavender; spinel is a more recent addition to the August birthstones.

Amarillo College is taking part in a one-year project using a $287,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission to help businesses hit by the Coronavirus pandemic. The training will be offered to businesses and employees within Potter, Randall, Deaf Smith, Moore, Carson, Castro, Oldham, Parmer, and Swisher counties and Amarillo College can provide up to $2,000 per trainee. Amarillo College is offering welding, wind energy, machining and electromechanical courses as well as health science. The child must present their shot records at the time of vaccination for them to be seen.
