Updated Tennis Courts Ready For Play

The Friona High School tennis courts received their first major renovation since being built in the 1960s along with the high school campus. This past Spring, a post-tensioned (PT) tennis court construction project, with a price tag of $395.000, was begun. Recently, a windscreen has been installed around the four courts for wind protection and privacy. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the new facility.

A post-tensioned (PT) tennis court is constructed with a concrete slab poured over a prepared base. Sheathed cables (tendons) are placed within the slab and extend from one end to the other. After the concrete hardens, the cables are mechanically tightened, creating compressive stress within the concrete. This process helps to prevent cracking and heaving, common issues with traditional asphalt courts.

Once the post-tensioned concrete slab is in place, a hard court surface is applied, which is commonly a cushioned acrylic or resin-based material. These materials provide a durable, resilient, and playable surface for tennis. They also offer good drainage and can be customized with colors and textures. The acrylic or resin surface can be designed with a cushioned layer for added comfort and to reduce the impact on players.

Benefits of Post-Tensioned Courts include: (1) Durability: PT courts are known for their long-term durability and resistance to cracking. (2) Reduced Maintenance: The increased durability translates to lower maintenance costs and less downtime for repairs. (3) Stability: PT courts can handle unstable soil conditions better than asphalt courts. (4) Uniformity: They provide a more uniform playing surface and better drainage. (5) Longer Lifespan: PT courts typically have a longer service life than asphalt courts.
