Josephine (Jody) James passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Hereford at the age of 100. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home with Deacon Ronnie Fetsch officiating and Ray Schlabs leading the rosary. Burial of Cremains will follow in Friona, Texas at the Friona Cemetery under the direction of Mendez and Mullins.
Jody was born on January 2, 1925, in Hereford, Texas, to Joe and Ida (Hopper) Jesko. She graduated from Muleshoe High School in 1942. Jody married C.W. James on November 20, 1949, in Bovina, Texas. She kept the books for her husband’s business, James Transport, and continued as his bookkeeper when they moved to Comanche, Texas, living there for 16 years before returning to Amarillo, Texas. Jody moved back to Hereford in 2014 to live with her daughter Carolyn.
Jody enjoyed baking, sewing, needlework, piecing quilts, crocheting, crafting, putting together puzzles, reading, and traveling with her husband C.W.
She will be sorely missed.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Hund of Hereford, Texas; Kathlyn Catoe and husband Paul of Abilene, Texas, and Marilyn Gaines, and husband Steve of Amarillo, Texas; twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren; twelve great-great grandchildren; and two great-great-great grandchildren; sister Pearl Acker of Plainview, Texas; two daughters-in-law, Sandra Bradford and husband Mike of Amarillo, Texas, and Trish Turner and husband Jackie of San Saba, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her Daddy and Mother, husband C. W. James, son Bill James, son-in-law Herman Hund, Sr., grandson H. Patrick Hund, Jr., two sisters Betty Bagley and Margaret Hoffman, and two brothers A.J. (Pete) Jesko and George Jesko.
Johnny Lee Stokes, age 66, of Clovis, NM, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, 2:00 pm MST, with Pastor BJ Brooks officiating at the Chapel of Angels, 1430 Thornton Street.
Johnny was born on March 28, 1959, in Friona, TX to Author Lee Stokes and Lena Frances Reed Stokes. He proudly served in the United Sates Navy from June 30, 1976, to March 8, 1979. Johnny married Glenna Stokes on July 7, 2025, in Ruidoso, NM. Johnny was a member of Central Baptist Church and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; Glenna Stokes of the home, son; Kelvin Stokes, granddaughter; Madison Stokes of Artesia, grandsons; James Stokes, and Sage Stokes all of Artesia, NM, sisters; Shirley Harris of Melrose, NM and Helen Hardin of Amarillo, TX, and brother; Gene Zachary of Abilene, TX.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Author Stokes and Lena Stokes, three brothers; Jerry Zachary, Gordon Stokes and Charles Allen Zachary, and one sister; Sylvia Gibson.
