Report by Charles Cooper, FVFD Reporter
The Friona Volunteer Fire Department is excited to announce the upcoming arrival of a rescue truck purchased with funds raised by the department through fundĀraising events such as gun raffles, as well as the generous donations of the townspeople. We greatly appreciate everyone who has supported and continues to support the fire department. The rescue truck will be used when responding to vehicle crashes, grain rescues, and structure fires. Currently all of the tools necessary for rescue are dispersed among several vehicles. The rescue truck will increase efficiency by consolidating all of these tools in a single vehicle. We are also in the process of obtaining a much needed pumper which will be purchased by the city and will replace one of our older engines. So far the fire department has responded to 6 calls in the month of February with a total combined response of 43 firemen, 12 trucks, and 127 volunteer man hours in calls, meetings, and training. More information on this and other fire department news will be coming in later issues of the paper.
Rescue 1 is a 2000 Saulsbury Freightliner Commercial Rescue truck with less than 20,000 miles. It is a dry truck (no water tank or pump), which allows extra room for storage. The Friona VFD will take possession of Rescue 1 this weekend.

In like a lion, out like a lamb - Back in the days of the Julian calendar when there were only 10 months and March started off the year, other sayings such as "A bushel of March dust is worth a King's ransom," and "March many weathers," reminded everyone of the swiftly changing and windy weather that March brings. The first three days in March were once considered bad luck. They called them the blind days. No one would plant, enter into an agreement, or a journey during these days.
The March vernal equinox signals the beginning of spring (vernal means fresh or new like the spring). It is one of the two moments in the year when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length. When the Northern Hemisphere starts to tilt toward the sun in spring, the Southern Hemisphere starts to tilt away from the sun, signaling the start of fall.
The full moon in March is called the Worm Moon. It earns this name because of all the insects beginning to hatch. Historically, planting and war go hand in hand in March. Named for the Roman god of War, Mars, March became a time when armies began to march again and farmers tilled their soil.

Spring sports - Congratulations to the FHS Powerlifting teams. They hosted their own tournament last week, the Friona Powerlifting Championships, with the girls finishing 3rd and the boys taking 1st place. The Squaws compete at regionals on March 5th and the Chiefs go to regionals on March 12th. Go Bid Red!
All spring sports are now underway. Just a reminder that it is possible to have all four seasons in one day in the Texas panhandle. The track teams are at Muleshoe this week with the Junior High competing on Thursday and the High School on Friday, weather permitting. Spring sports schedules will be published in next week's edition.
